Apparently, two TV shows about cupcakes -- the Food Network's Cupcake Wars and TLC's DC Cupcakes -- weren't enough. Thankfully, Women's Entertainment network has stepped in to fill the void. Its show, The Cupcake Girls, premieres Thurs., Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. ET.
While Cupcake Wars pits cupcake designers against one another, and DC Cupcakes documents a pair of cupcake shop-owning sisters, this third show follows the professional and personal lives of two friends/business partners "in their hectic and often hilarious journey to build a cupcake empire."
In other words, it's a reality show about two women navigating the pressures of the small business world. Their trendy, whimsical product is, no doubt, the hook that snagged them a TV show. But based on the show's promo, the cupcakes themselves seem beside the point. Ten seconds in, a confounded friend actually asks, "You don't know how to cook?" while the women are shown struggling to work the oven properly. And according to the Website, the show's first episode also features "the daily struggles of Cadence, a transitioning transgender woman and Cupcakes’ most fabulous and unique employee." What Cadence is doing in the cupcake business has yet to be established, and I suspect it won't come up.
Truth is, this really doesn't appear to be a show about diminutive confections with pink frosting. It's about working women, relating to one another, managing their outlandish employees and making time for their families. Viewers who wouldn't normally go in for such a show might well get drawn in because of the word "cupcake" in the title. And frankly, if the show turns out to be interesting, who really cares what they're selling?
In the meantime, pass me a cupcake, would you?
