Move over, vitamins C and E. Researchers have discovered a new antioxidant that not only provides an unparalleled shield from the most harmful rays from the sun but might also leave you with younger looking skin.
Dermatological experts from Newcastle University pinpointed Tiron as this potent antioxidant, which provides total (yes, as in 100%) skin protection to the area of skin cells know as the mitochondria. In fact, it beat out resveratrol (found in red wine) and curcumin (found in curries), two other powerful antioxidants.
“To discover that Tiron offers complete protection against UVA damage is exciting and promising,” stated Mark Birch-Machin, Professor of Molecular Dermatology at Newcastle University, as reported by ScienceDaily. “However, it is early days as Tiron is not a naturally occurring compound and has not yet been tested for toxicity in humans although there have been a few studies on rats." Rats!
In the meantime, skin scientists are currently trying to understand just how this antioxidant works. Another study co-author says the discovery of Tiron offers an opportunity to evaluate an antioxidant, and “preferably a naturally occurring compound with a similar structure which could then be safely added to food or cosmetics." They hope that a toxic-free skin product or skin supplement will be available in “several years."
Until then, ladies, keep wearing your sunscreen and make sure you diet contains the anti-aging green tea, tomatoes and red wine.
