Are Legs the New Boobs?

Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus let loose in leotards

In recent summers, shorts have pulled a serious disappearing act. Take a look around celeb land and you'll see myriad performers and models baring their legs. Styles range from relatively tame high-waisted panties to the more risque leotards of Lady Gaga, a champion of pantslessness who has taken the trend all the way to Yankee Stadium. We credit Beyonce for launching the leotard look in her "Single Ladies" video and to Miley Cyrus for controversially jumping on the pantless band wagon.

So with all this leg-baring, one has to wonder: Are uber-exposed legs the new jaw-dropping cleavage?

For those of us who are less endowed up top, the answer may be a resounding "Finally!" and for the rest of the world, this can be an awesome opportunity to try something fun and different. Here are three tips to try this trend in the real world:

More is more. (Coverage, that is.)
While Lady Gaga's version of pantslessnes often involves leotards, fishnets and a partial view of her cheeks, the derrieres of mere mortals should remain fully covered. A number of full coverage "panty" shorts have come down the runways with high waists that counterbalance the overall nakedness of so much leg, like these sailor shorts from Urban Outfitters. For the less adventurous, going a bit longer (about mid-thigh) and choosing a darker shade will be a more flattering look.

The girls or the gams -- not both.
When you're showing off that much skin below the waist, a low-cut top could easily be too much. Remember that often the sexiest thing to do is to leave a little to the imagination. Another benefit of not going skimpy up top is that it will keep you well-balanced. If you're pear-shaped, coupling a tight top with a bottom that brings attention to your hips, thighs and booty can make you appear bottom heavy. Try a voluminous blouse or a structured jacket with shoulder emphasis (another hot trend) to keep everything in proportion.

Be bold!
Figure out what's comfortable for you and what you feel good in because "going pantsless" is a sexy look that's made all the more alluring by a nice dose of confidence.
