This week, two reports have emerged about teen stars in talks to join The X Factor judging panel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Demi Lovato's up for the job. And Celebuzz has it that Miley Cyrus is also being considered!
If hired, they would take the spots vacated by Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, who got fired back in January when Simon Cowell decided the show needed bigger stars -- and ones that could bring in a younger audience.
Lovato and Cyrus certainly fit that bill. Both girls are 19. Both are former Disney Channel stars (of Sonny with a Chance and Hannah Montana, respectively) with thriving pop music careers. And both have had their share of tabloid drama throughout the last couple of years. In 2010, Lovato checked into a treatment center for a range of issues, from bulimia and self-injury to depression, bipolar disorder and drug use.
As for Cyrus, growing up in the spotlight has been something of a double edged sword, image-wise. Since the public got to know her as a sweet-as-pie 12-year-old on the Disney Channel, people have had mixed feelings about watching her grow into a sexy teen who likes to party. (The biggest public outcries came after TMZ released videos of her giving someone a lap dance at age 16 and smoking from a bong at age 18.)
No doubt, both their successes and their controversies appeal to Cowell, who after all just wants to get young viewers to tune in. He's already close to a $15 million deal with that paramour of teen pop success (and tabloid headlines), Britney Spears. She may be 30 now, but Spears hasn't lost her own lightning-rod quality among pop culture fans. A lineup that includes Spears and one of these teen pop sensations would be Cowell's answer to the star-studded panels on American Idol and The Voice. Indeed, that answer would be a big "So there!"
There's no telling whether Cyrus or Lovato would have chemistry with Spears or the existing judges, Cowell and Epic Records chairman, L.A. Reid. But it sounds like Cowell is willing to give it a try. Whoever gets the gig, one thing's for sure: We'll be tuning into The X Factor this September!
