There is some evidence that a diet rich in soy (a weak estrogen) can help reduce hot flashes. Symptoms like hot flashes are associated with declining estrogen levels. “Rich in soy” means about 25 grams a day, roughly 3-4 servings, regularly. Don’t expect an occasional glass of soy milk, or handful of soy nuts (each around 6-8 grams of soy) to have much impact. Other good dietary sources of soy are edamame (available frozen or fresh), tofu, frozen soy burgers (like Boca burgers), tempeh, and soy yogurt/cheese, in addition to soy milk and roasted soy nuts. It’s certainly worth a try!
