Eddie Franklin, the son of legendary singer Aretha Franklin, was severely beaten at a gas station in Detroit, according to USA Today. The 53-year-old was attacked by two men and a woman and has since had to undergo emergency surgery.

A spokeswoman for the Franklin family said his condition wasn't immediately known and no additional details about the attack, including why it happened, were given yet. The Detroit Police also had no additional information to share, but said they were looking in to the attack.

USA Today also notes that in 2002 Eddie was suspected of causing a fire at his mother's $1.6 million mansion in Detroit. The fire destroyed Grammy awards and items intended for donation to the Smithsonian. But, in the end, Eddie was cleared of the charges.

Franklin, a singer himself, has performed with gospel choirs throughout Detroit and has even been featured on mom Aretha's latest album A Woman Falling Out of Love.
