Arnold Schwarzenegger: My Affair Was the "Stupidest Thing" I've Done

On the heels of his upcoming book launch, the former California governor is finally opening up about the infedility that broke up his marriage with Maria Shriver

Arnold Schwarzenegger is releasing a memoir telling the story of his life, and now he can't stop talking about all his dirty little secrets.

The former Governator is busy promoting his new book Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, in which he discusses the cheating scandal that resulted in his wife Maria Shriver leaving him. Schwarzenegger, 65, sat down with 60 Minutes in an interview that will air Sunday, Sept. 30 (at 7 p.m. ET on CBS) where he opened up about the personal issue more than he already has.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship," he says after reporter Lesley Stahl calls him out on his "unbelievable act of betrayal." "It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids."

Though Schwarzenegger is all up for talking about the incident during the interview, you won't see Shriver on the program. The Terminator stars says his estranged wife won't even read his memoir.

"She knows that it's about my whole life and that I would not write a book and kind of leave out that part and make people feel like, 'Well, wait a minute. Are we just getting a book about his success stories and not talk about his failures?'" he says. "I wanted to write a book about me."

Shriver and Schwarzenegger have four children together -- Katherine, 22; Christina, 21; Patrick, 19; and Christopher, 15 -- but last year it was revealed that the former California governor had fathered a child, 14-year-old Joseph, with his housekeeper Mildred Baena. Sections of the memoir that have been released online prior to the book's launch detail just how Shriver found out about the affair.

Schwarzenegger writes that she confronted him about it at a couples' counseling session on Jan. 4, 2011. "The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child -- whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,'" he says. "I told the therapist, 'It's true.'"

The Daily Mail claims that Schwarzenegger then delves deeper into the details of the affair, claiming it happened when he was filming Batman & Robin in 1996. The pair had sex in the guesthouse of his Pacific Palisades estate; Shriver and their children were away on vacation. Schwarzenegger continues on to say Shriver had confronted him about Joseph before the 2011 incident but he had denied it.

"Instead of doing the right thing, I’d just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn’t deal with it every day," he writes.

Schwarzenegger's memoir comes out October 1.
