The scary symptoms that prompted Art Smith, Chicago-based chef and two-time James Beard Award winner, to race to the hospital a few years ago turned out to be those of a panic disorder and not the heart attack that he feared. But weighing 325 pounds and suffering from type 2 diabetes, Oprah’s former personal chef knew it was time to make a change. After an extensive search, Smith enlisted the help of life coach Az Ferguson, whose approach to weight loss and fitness includes plenty of produce, 60-plus minutes of daily exercise and lots of social support, which studies have found to be helpful for losing weight and keeping it off. Smith has inspired other chefs to shed unhealthy pounds and has shared his recipes with the likes of Dr. Oz, including this simple and sumptuous red bell pepper soup, which is featured as a recipe to reverse heart disease at DoctorOz.com.
