When Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher announced their split on Thursday, the only shocker was the fact that their relationship -- which had been plagued by rumors of infidelity since late September -- survived as long as it did. But, as an inside source tells People, the couple was putting in a last-ditch effort to save their six-year marriage. Sadly, they couldn't stop fighting long enough to make things work.
"The fighting could get pretty intense," says the source of the blowouts between Kutcher, 33, and Moore, 49. "Whatever counseling they did was fine for a quick fix but could not get to the heart of the problem."
As another People source reveals, the "problem" -- or, rather, problems -- ran deeper and longer than allegations that Kutcher cheated on his wife with 22-year-old Sara Leal in late September. Finally, they just had to call it a day.
"Ashton is unhappy; (Demi)'s unhappy," says the source. "It just got to a point where they had to end it."
And end it they did.
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," Moore said in a statement released Nov. 17. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."
In true Ashton fashion, Kutcher lifted his recently self-imposed Twitter ban to share his thoughts on the social-networking site. "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," he wrote. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
