By now, most everyone has heard that Demi Moore is divorcing Ashton Kutcher in the wake of allegations that Ashton, 33, cheated on Demi, 49, with 22-year-old Sara Leal in late September. But it may have been another public embarrassment, Kutcher's careless tweet protesting the firing of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno -- that sent Moore over the edge.
The Twitter scandal ended with Kutcher handing his account over to his management, but the damage had already been done. Kutcher had posted an uninformed comment defending Paterno and saying that the university had "#noclass" for firing him. A deluge of angry commenters immediately explained to Kutcher why Paterno had los his job -- he played a part in covering up alleged acts of sexual abuse by his team's former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky -- and Kutcher fully recanted his tweet.
But, as a source on the set of Kutcher's sitcom Two and a Half Men, tells HollywoodLife.com, Kutcher's Twitter gaff had even greater repercussions for his personal life.
"It looked as if things were progressing, and then of all things when Ashton messed up on Twitter, it was another thing to get Demi upset," says the source. "She believed he really didn't care about the details of things and the embarrassment of that reminded her of the embarrassment he caused her with the cheating. It basically opened the can of worms again resulting in Demi finally deciding to take on the divorce."
Apparently things had actually been better after Kutcher's cheating scandal. The source says their marriage was on the rocks while Moore was off filming the Miley Cyrus film LOL, but the scandal helped the couple to remember why they were in love in the first place.
"That is why you started seeing them camping, her on set and other moments of them together trying to repair their relationship woes," the source says.
But the Paterno Twitter scandal brought back all the negative feelings Moore had when she had to go through the trying time after the Leal story came out, and she decided she'd had enough.
Ironically, Kutcher took to Twitter to confirm the news that he and Moore were divorcing. "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," he wrote. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK." Old habits die hard, we guess.
