Ask the Expert: Julia Youssef

Julia Youssef, is here to help you achieve the bold, edgy, unique haircolor looks you've been craving - all by yourself, in the comfort of your own home.

If you're going to color your hair, you're going to go all the way. Why go through all that work for people to think it's natural? But you're too fashion forward for those punky, messy vegetable dyes you may have used in high school or college. What's a girl to do?

Fortunately for you, there's Féria. Although many people think that at-home-haircolor products are all the same, Julia Youssef, Assistant Vice President, L'Oréal Technical Center says there are actually enormous differences across brands, even when they're made by the same company.

"Women color their hair for different reasons, and at different times of their lives. A woman whose top priority is healthy, natural-looking color should use a non-permanent, ammonia-free product, like ColorSpa. A woman with a lot of gray to cover should use a product that can do that and still look natural, which is what we formulated Excellence to do. But a woman who's coloring her hair to make a fashion statement - to express herself - should use Féria. We created this product to help women achieve fashion-forward color results that used to be impossible at home."

In our new "Ask The Expert" feature, Julia will answer the most frequently asked questions about bold, edgy, fearless at-home haircolor. This month, she addresses basic concerns about shade selection. Check back soon for exciting information about streaks, chunking, tipping, dip-dyeing, and other advanced techniques to make you look runway-ready!

I know I want to color my hair, and I know I want something different, but I just don't know where to begin.
As you probably know, most permanent-haircolor products can add a multitude of tones to your hair: warm golds, hot reds, rich browns, and so on. These choices give you the power to dramatically transform the "mood" of your hair while making it just a little lighter or just a little darker. Why not start here? Assuming you're using an intense dye, like Féria, you'd be shocked how different your hair would look with a boost of bronze or a bold auburn accent.

I want to be blonde. Very blonde! Ultimate blonde! But every time I try, it turns out orange. What am I doing wrong?
Unless you're naturally blonde, achieving that light, bright, megawatt blonde look requires "double processing." First, you have to remove your natural color with a Féria bleaching kit. Then you can add color and tone with a Féria blonde shade of your choice.

The results can be stunning, but be forewarned: This is a high-maintenance look! When touching up your roots, you'll be doing it in 2 steps, not 1. Fortunately, right now, roots are acceptable. So you'll only have to touch up every 4 to 6 weeks.

I have brown hair. Whenever I dye it, the results aren't what I was expecting, or there's not much of a result at all.
You can create a stunning transformation by going deeper, darker, more intense. For example, you can choose a red shade that's darker (not lighter) than your own: an auburn, mahogany, burgundy,or true red. Or you can try a black shade. Whereas it's true that black is a high-maintenance look - you have to change your make-up, and you may want to adopt a more dramatic haircut to pull it off - it's also incredibly stunning. Féria offers not just one black but three: Starry Night, a very popular shade with lots and lots of blue in it; Midnight Ruby, the darkest, blackest auburn you've ever seen; and Black Leather, a true, pure, neutral black. Finally, Féria #36, a chocolate-cherry color, looks gorgeous against dark hair and is one of our best sellers.

I have naturally black hair. What are my options?
If you want something that's bold and easy at the same time - a big change everyone will notice - you should try something from the Féria Power Reds collection. These shades come with a Colour Booster that makes the red visible against even the darkest hair. There's a bold copper, an intense auburn, and an amazing burgundy - something for everyone. Plus, we've just launched our latest collection, High-Lift Browns, which creates soft lighter-brown tones on even the darkest natural hair.
