Monday marked the first night of the season 5 reunion show for The Real Housewives of New York City (Mondays at 9 p.m. ET, in Bravo). And for veterans LuAnn de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan and Ramona Singer, this wasn't their first rodeo. But for season 5 newcomers Carole Radziwill, Aviva Drescher, and Heather Thomson, it was their first time experiencing the particularly catty nature of this ritualized event. How'd they do? Carole and Heather weathered the storm with relative aplomb. But Aviva? Not so much.
Fans of the Housewives franchise know there's always one lady who draws everyone's ire at once. On Sunday night's reunion of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, that dubious distinction went to Teresa Giudice. In the New York version, Aviva was the pile-on victim. Her season-long feud with those smart-mouthed queens of gossip, Ramona and Sonja, made her the prime target of reunion-show animosity. After all, she did refer to them, at one point in the season, as "white trash."
"You hurt me terribly," snapped Ramona, who hadn't spoken to Aviva since season 5 filming had ended. "Terribly!" At one point in the reunion episode, she broke down in tears over the way Aviva treated her.
Unlike Jersey Housewife Teresa, Aviva appeared to soften. While Teresa dug in and denied any wrongdoing, Aviva admitted her mistakes. And she put it so eloquently, she must have rehearsed her remarks beforehand.
"I do not have the monopoly on pain and loss, and my problems are no worse than anybody else's, and I threw that onto you and I apologize," she told them. "And if you don't find it in your hearts to accept my apology then I understand it."
But the unimpressed pair simply looked down their noses at Aviva. Sonja pointed out that Aviva has apologized before, only to turn around and bad mouth them to the press, on her blog, and on Twitter.
"I'm sitting here now, before the world, and in front of you two, in person, telling you that I am profusely sorry," Aviva added. The ladies remained unmoved.
"When I say I'm sorry, not only do I say it with words but you can bet your bottom dollar that it will never happen again," she said. By that point, Ramona merely appeared miffed at Aviva's refusal to engage in verbal combat. How could she do what she does best (i.e. hurl insults) when her target caved so easily?
"I have no ill will toward you, I only wish you the best," she said, sighing. "I just think you need a different therapist."
Frankly, parts of the episode were rather dull. LuAnn and Carole had a tedious exchange about LuAnn asking to borrow a dress from Carole's designer friend, Naeem Khan. (Carole found this to be rude.) LuAnn's apparent affair while in St. Barth's is a much more interesting topic, but we'll have to wait until Part 2 to hear about it. The show's producers have clearly opted to save some of the reunion's juicy tidbits for next week.
But while this reunion didn't feature the fireworks launched during the New Jersey Housewives reunion, it had its humorous moments. In one funny outtake, Ramona stops the proceedings because she's hot. She'd like a cooler room.
Thing is, these are all women who are used to giving orders and getting their way. Some are hot, some are cold, no one agrees.
"Lower it by three degrees," Ramona orders the crew.
"Lower it by one degree," Carole counters.
"OK, we'll compromise at two," says a smirking Andy Cohen. Boy, does this man earn his paycheck.
Watch what next week will bring!
