Your Baby's Fifth Week of Life

What's Happening with your Baby

Your baby may surprise you by not needing nearly as much sleep as you expected. Babies naturally vary in the amount of sleep they need. Very wakeful babies can be a special challenge. You may find it helpful to explore different ways of interacting with your little one -- talking to her while you work, giving her interesting (and safe) objects to look at and carrying her with you in a sling as you go about your day. Be careful not to fall into the comparison trap with other parents. All babies are different and these differences often become more pronounced as the first year progresses. Enjoy your baby's individuality.

Taking Care of Yourself

To give yourself peace of mind you may want to begin expressing and stockpiling some of your milk. This is particularly important for those moms who will be returning to work in the near future and plan to continue to nurse. Once breastfeeding is well established, choose a breast pump that works for you and learn to use it before you are in a pressured situation.
