Fact of the Week
Approximately 50 percent of all new mothers complain of experiencing mood swings or feeling sad, weepy or anxious during the first few weeks following the birth of their baby. This is most likely due to the drastic decline in estrogen and progesterone levels after childbirth. It usually disappears after a few days, though some moms are affected for the first six weeks, or longer. True postpartum depression affects about 25 percent of first-time mothers (20 percent in subsequent pregnancies) and can last for months. If you suspect that you have postpartum depression, please contact your health care provider for the help you need.
