'Bachelor Pad': Familiar Faces, Much Different Game

ABC's new reality spinoff, Bachelor Pad, stars 19 former contestants from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. But if you enjoy the original competitions -- with starry-eyed singles going on romantic "journeys" in search of a soul mate -- this new take might startle you. It features many of the same people you've seen before, but this time they won't be whispering sweet, schmaltzy nothings into one another's ears. Well, they might be, but chances are they're not being sincere.

On The Bachelor/Bachelorette, there's one goal: winning someone's heart. On Bachelor Pad, the goals are many: gaining allies, winning challenges, not getting voted off the show, and ultimately receiving a cash prize of $250,000. If one or another participant happens to find love along the way, well, that's nice, too.

It's a jungle out there in the dating world, and Bachelor Pad is the dating world's Survivor. It even features its own sort of tribal vote at the end of the episodes. Contestants can exempt themselves from the vote-off by winning challenges, like the first episode's giant game of Twister. (This looks exactly how you'd imagine it would: 19 hard bodies in short-shorts and bikinis, reaching and stretching over one another in compromising positions.) Another challenge requires contestants to kiss each other while blindfolded. And so on.

Naturally, the contestants are selected based on the level of craziness they've displayed in their respective seasons. (It goes without saying that the crazier the better.) Thus the loony, non-kissy Michelle Kujawa, from Jake Pavelka's season, has taken up residence. Also, Wes Hayden, the country music singer who sent shock waves through Jillian Harris's Bachelorette season when he brazenly stated that he was there for self-promotion purposes only. "I'm the only guy in The Bachelorette history who's made it to the top four with a girlfriend," he also said. Charming.

Some contestants-like Tenley Molzahn and Kiptyn Locke-are well-known to viewers, because they came thisclose to winning on their seasons. Others have clearly been invited back because of their clashes with each other-like Jonathan Novack and Craig M. from Ali Fedotowsky's season.

In other words, the producers have made a point of including participants who have already shown signs of craftiness, or at least a Machiavellian attitude toward getting what they want. In love, and in reality competitions, that can work to one's advantage.
