You can be rich and successful, you can even be a former first kid, but that’s doesn’t mean your granny can’t embarrass the heck out of you.
In an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today Show for the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas, Barbara Bush let it rip, bringing her trademark tell-it-like-it-is honesty when responding to questions. Flanked by former First Lady Laura Bush and granddaughters Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush, the group was asked if they thought Jeb Bush should be president. Daughter-in-law Laura said she thought Jeb would make a “terrific” president. An awkward silence followed. Then Jenna Bush said, “The fact that Ganny didn’t talk at all … I’m proud of you!”
When Lauer pointedly asked the elder former first lady if she thought he should run, she paused and then let loose:
“He’s by far the most qualified man, but no, I really don’t. I think it’s a great country and there are a lot of great families. It’s not just four families or whatever. There are other people out there that are very qualified, and we’ve had enough Bushes.”
“Have you expressed that to him?” Lauer asked. “Just on the Today Show,” Laura Bush quipped. “Surprise!” added Jenna.
The Bush family might be busy doing damage control, and making sure Barbara Sr. never goes near a mike again. But we kind of love knowing even a distinguished family like the Bushes has that feisty family member who keeps it real.
