Last night, Barbara Walters delivered her 29th and final Barbara Walters Oscar Special. "I guess I could have stopped at 30," said the 80-year-old news veteran. "But it seemed like a cliché." She was more candid about her decision on ABC's The View: “To be honest, I feel like I’ve 'been there, done that,'" she said.
Walters' swan song featured interviews with Oscar nominees Mo'Nique and Sandra Bullock, plus a fast-moving retrospective of Walters' past pre-Oscar chats which confirmed that the journalist has indeed interviewed everyone who's anyone!
The most entertaining clips showed some of the host's silliest questions over the years:
To Meg Ryan: Do you think you’re a good actress? (Answer: “Sometimes.”)
To Michelle Pfeiffer: Do you think you’re beautiful? (Answer: “Sometimes.”)
To Tom Cruise: Did you know you were good-looking? (Answer: He had an inkling about his looks as a teen, when his sister's friends used him for "kissing practice.")
To Nicolas Cage: What’s been the best time of your life? (Answer: “Right here, right now, with you.”)
And yes, she has clearly "been there, done that." Lifting weights with Sharon Stone? Check. Getting a lap dance from Hugh Jackman? Check. Taking striptease lessons from Demi Moore? Check. Asking Ricky Martin to just admit that he was gay? Check. (Looking back, she admitted she had "asked Ricky Martin the question that many to this day think was inappropriate" -- indeed, some say Martin's career never recovered.)
Walters' last two pre-Oscar interviews had their moments. Mo'Nique's defense of her much-reported open marriage was interesting (as was her explanation for never shaving her legs: it's painful), but even rumors that she and Walters clashed off camera failed to make their sit-down seem very controversial. And Walters' chat with Sandra Bullock was only as exciting as an interview with a stable woman in a solid relationship can be. "I never allowed myself to be cared for or protected in a relationship [before Jesse]," Bullock said of her husband, Jesse James.
The most fascinating moment? Bullock turned the tables on Walters: "Since this is your last interview," asked the Blind Side star (and eventual Oscar winner), "in five years, what would you like to have in your life that you don’t have now?"
"Time," said Walters, without missing a beat. "That’s it."
