Were Barbara Walters' Picks Really That Fascinating?

Ben Affleck, Honey Boo Boo and Prince Harry all made the list. What did you think of Walters' choices?

Barbara Walters has revealed her 10 most fascinating people of 2012, and we agree with some on her list more than others.

Unfortunately, some of the more interesting additions to her fascinating people didn't consent to be interviewed. General David Petraeus earned Walters' top spot this year -- and considering his fall from grace, we would have loved to hear his side of his story, but to no avail. Similarly, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Prince Harry wouldn't want to open up to Walters about his recent nude photo scandal.

Also on the list were Olympic gold medal gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James, One Direction and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. But unfortunately none of them stood out as over-the-top exciting. Yes, everyone was obsessed with Douglas when she became the first African-American gymnast to become an individual all-around champion. Yes, everyone is intrigued by James' story. But these are all interesting tales that are relatively well-known, and we wish Walters would have found some people who had remained off the map.

We're in full support of Walters' decision to include Honey Boo Boo -- as her phenomenal popularity this year had everyone scratching their heads. But unfortunately the sassy pageant star also declined an interview. (Maybe she was too hopped up on go-go juice to make it to the studio!)

So what about and Ben Affleck making the cut? He's hardly the first to make the jump from hunky actor to successful director, and he was just as "fascinating" the year he made The Town as he is now with Argo.

A much better pick for his spot would have been Joss Whedon, who is a household name for some and a complete unknown for others. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator made one of the most successful movies of all time this year, The Avengers, and did it the way he wanted it to be done. That's fascinating because the man has never been able to keep a TV show afloat to save his life, and he even had troubles back in the day with Buffy. How is he not considered one of the most fascinating people this year? He certainly is one of the most successful.

As for Seth MacFarlane -- why not pick Jessica Chastain instead, whom everyone should know but many likely don't. She slips quietly from roles like Celia Foote in The Help to Samantha in Take Shelter to Maya in Zero Dark Thirty, and she's easily one of the most talented actresses of her generation. MacFarlane's rise to fame is well documented, while little is known about how Chastain came out of nowhere.

Also tragically missing from this list is Taylor Swift, who has managed to captivate everyone's interest this year. How about the way the lyrics in Red were picked apart to try to discover which of her ex's she was singing about? Or the fact that she's the second highest-paid musician of the year? Swift is an enigma, and one we're dying to know more about -- even if she does put most of it out on the table in her music.
