Just in Time for Valentine's Day: Barbie and Ken Reunite!

We were outraged when Brad dumped wholesome Jen for that scheming, lush-lipped, man-magnet Angie. We cheered when Harrison finally made an honest woman of Calista. We continue to scratch our heads over the whole TomKat thing (but at least little Suri’s antics and outfits are fun to follow). Clearly, we're fascinated with the lives and loves of supernovas we do not and probably never will know personally. But Barbie and Ken?

The anatomically-ambiguous couple announced today that they have reunited after a seven-year split. The news broke, as these things often do, via a relationship status-change on Bab’s Facebook page (a who-knew hub that as of this writing has more than 1.7 million “likes”). Apparently, the couple has been quietly contemplating a reunion since they were cast in last year’s Toy Story 3. “To be fair, [Barbie and Ken] have been together for about 43 years, so you know, I think everyone needs a break,” Lisa McKnight, VP of marketing for Mattel, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “So they took a little break and had fun out on their own and were certainly out and about, but I think ultimately, again, they were destined for each other.”

Sure, the whole thing is nothing but a brilliant marketing ploy by Mattel. But am I the only one who's a tiny bit disturbed by this “news”? First of all, I hadn’t even realized my childhood friends had split up, so of course hearing that made me feel woefully old and out of touch. Then, I had to digest the fact that people genuinely care about dolls’ love lives. Now I have to worry that kids with divorced parents are hearing about this romantic reunion (on Valentine’s Day, no less!) and harboring false hopes that, despite replacement spouses and restraining orders in some cases, mom and dad may just reconnect, too. But ultimately, I don’t begrudge any couple their happiness, even if they are, well, plastic.
