One of my favorite mom moments from childhood was when my mom would take me and my two sisters to the beach in the summer. We would get up really early, pack our car with towels, sunscreen, books, sand toys, changes of clothes, snorkles, fins, and always grapes, string cheese and iced tea. Then we would drive to the beach, usually with Stevie Wonder or Paul McCartney & Wings blasting on the stereo, with us usually singing along. When we got there, we would carry all of this down a winding trail to a secluded beach we like to go to, and have a great day at the beach. I'm sure there were times during those trips that one or more of us wasn't so agreeable, but all I remember is swimming with my mom and my sisters, and having my mom put sun lotion on our backs and helping us change into clothes behind a towel when we were heading home.
When I think of these times I still remember the smell of the ocean, the warmth of the sun, the slippery kelp and the feel of sunburn on my skin. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I can't believe my mom did all of this with such good humor, with THREE girls. And I can't go to the beach now without my grapes and iced tea. I will always love my mom for giving me these memories.
