Beating the Heat When You're Pregnant

When summertime hits,staying cool this summer is of concern to everyone. But when you're pregnant and dealing with hormone surges, extra body weight and ever-changing physical phenomena, the heat can be extra troublesome. Here are some no-nonsense yet creative approaches to staying cool (and sane) during the summer heat.

Beating the Heat at Night
"Since I've been pregnant, I have developed insomnia. I realized that part of my sleeping problem was that I was too hot. So now I sleep with a small fan directly in my face, and I am starting to get almost six hours of sleep (not bad for an insomniac)!"

Coolness to Go
"Here in South Florida it's quite a challenge to beat the heat. Here's what works for me: 1) I turn the car on and blast the air conditioner for a few minutes. I'll go back to the car whenever I need to cool off, fast. 2) I make healthy ice-pops out of fresh fruit juices. 3) I have considered freezing my undies, but have yet to get that desperate!"

Enlist Your Freezer
"I live in Texas, so it is really hot here. I keep cool by eating lots of fruit; especially watermelon. I even froze it. It was yummy and healthy and cold. I also spent part of every evening in the pool. It was great exercise and kept me cool."

Try Your Tub
" We don't have a pool or access to a pool. So, I just pretend that my bathtub is my own personal pool. I fill it up with cool water, fix myself a nice tall drink, and sit in there until I stop sweating. I also put a cool washcloth on my forehead. Then I stay in until I start to prune. I don't know what I'd do if we didn't have a tub!"
