Beauty tips for the professional traveler

If you travel for business, you know how difficult it can be to look your best after hours in transit. How do you stay polished and groomed on the outside no matter how exhausted and frazzled you may be on the inside? These tips may help.

  • Pack only what you need. In the rush of getting ready to leave, it's tempting to take everything. But you'd be wise to take the time to sort through makeup, hair and bath products and determine exactly what you'll need. Think carefully about your schedule and the looks you'll want to create -- whether it's a morning meeting, midday lunch or fancy dinner with a client.
  • Organize products resourcefully. If you like to apply moisturizer in-flight, make sure it's in your carry-on bag. On the other hand, make sure you aren't lugging your shampoo on board. You may want to invest in a travel kit. Not only will you be forced to get organized, but you can only take products in the amounts that you need, so you'll be traveling lighter!
  • Don't skimp on skin care. Airports and airplanes are notoriously dry and can leave your skin feeling parched. (And if you're on the road, don't forget that the sun's rays penetrate windshields!) Take a good moisturizer and a sunscreen.
  • Spray yourself every hour on the plane. Susan Ciminelli, of New York's Ciminelli Day Spa, says her most essential carry-on item is a travel-size spray lotion that contains essential oils to hydrate the skin. Ciminelli also likes to turn her hotel room into a mini spa.
  • Take at least one relaxation treat. When a business trip lasts overnight, you need to wake up refreshed and ready for another busy day. An aromatherapy travel candle will transform even the dreariest hotel room into a comfort zone. Or take bath oils or salts so you can soak away a hectic day and prepare for a restful sleep. Ciminelli likes to turn her hotel tub into a "cellulite" spa, by mixing two tablespoons of her algae powder with an aromatic bath toner, then soaking for 30 minutes. She follows the bath with a generous application of moisturizer made with essential oils. For a deluxe treatment, apply a hydrating facial mask while you soak.
  • Use a neck pillow on plane trips to avoid flattening hair. And, says Kazuya Kobayashi, hairstylist at Frederic Fekkai, if your hair is long enough, wear a ponytail to protect against dirt and tangling. "If you are going straight to a meeting or event," Kobayashi adds, "take out the ponytail about an hour before arrival to avoid creasing your hair."
  • Don't overload your hair with products before traveling. Too much product will weigh hair down, says Kobayashi. Hair languishes at light speed when it's smashed against headrests, and it dries out in the stale air of train stations and planes. To liven up flat hair upon arrival, Kobayashi recommends using a volumizing spray and, with your fingers, lightly massaging your hair from the roots for a quick lift. For curly hair, he suggests a protein spray to control frizz and sustain shine. For straight styles, he says, a small amount of glossing cream will help maintain a polished look.
  • Don't use shampoos and conditioners provided by the hotel. "They're often too harsh," says Kobayashi. "Bring travel-size containers of your own, using products made specifically for your hair type and condition."
  • Wear very little makeup while traveling. Depending on your schedule upon arrival, you may want to begin your trip makeup-free, so you can keep your skin clean and moist en route. If makeup is a must, try to tread lightly, with oil-free liquid products or powders. Internationally renowned makeup artist Robert Jones (author of Simple Beaute) says curling your eyelashes and wearing mascara will enliven your look no matter how weary you are. And a light application of blush or bronzer will keep you from looking pale and tired.
  • Prepare for lost luggage. Just in case, Jones recommends you bring these basics on board in case your luggage is lost, so you won't be stranded: moisturizer, concealer, powder, lip balm, an eyelash curler, mascara and a light blush or bronzer. Also, throw in a few moisturizing towelettes that contain makeup remover and whatever tools you regularly use for upkeep.
