Beginning to breastfeed: Answers to your 10 most-asked questions

9. I have to go back to work. When can I introduce the bottle?
Most lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is at least three to six weeks of age before introducing the bottle, to allow yourself time to establish breastfeeding.

10. When should I wean my baby?
There is no set time to wean your baby. Every day that you breastfeed both you and your baby are accumulating the health benefits. The American Academy of Pediatrics is currently recommending exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is six months of age, with the gradual introduction of solid foods at that time. Breastfeeding should remain the primary source of the infant's nutrition up to one year and beyond as long as is mutually desired. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least two years.
