It's All Relative for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon

Ever since they wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting together, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been telling the world that they're best friends. Now for the first time, the world is learning the truth -- Matt and Ben are much more than friends.

They're tenth cousins, once removed.

A genealogist with way too much time on his hands has traced Damon and Affleck's family trees back to a common ancestor: William Knowlton, a Massachusetts bricklayer from the 1600s. He's the tenth great-grandfather on both their fathers' sides; you can check out the full family tree here.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society also mentioned that Ben Affleck is related to 16 American presidents, including Barack Obama. Affleck and Obama are eleventh cousins, going back to a common Cape Cod family (presumably on Obama's mother's side, although they've been in the Midwest for generations; you can see a partial family tree here). The Society also mentioned a connection between Affleck and Princess Di, but didn't elaborate, leading us to suspect that they're fifty-seventh cousins twice removed, or something equally tenuous.

Celebrity genealogy turns up fun facts like this every couple years. The most speculated-upon connection is probably the relationship between Oprah and Elvis Presley, which can't be proved by documentation, since the Presleys on Oprah's side were slaves.
