Stand-up Paddleboard

Stand-up Paddling (SUP) is a combination of canoeing and surfing -- you stand on a surfboard while paddling through ocean waves or placid lakes or bays. This intense core workout is not easy and requires an investment in a board, a paddle and a few accessories. But once you make that investment, it’s a free and fun way to get fit. “The core strength needed for this activity will help to improve balance and lower back conditions,” says DeVito. It’s also pretty awesome to be surrounded by water, which has been proven to improve mental health, according to a study done by researchers from the University of Essex in the U.K. To learn more about how to get started, check out this beginner’s guide to stand-up paddleboarding.
