Gru in 'Despicable Me'

The squat animated villain voiced by Steve Carell has ambitions: he wants to steal the moon. Nyahaha! And he has issues, too: he was never good enough to please his mother (Julia Andrews).

While Gru is clearly nasty and selfish -- he uses his freeze gun to annihilate those in front of him in line at a café -- his Freudian sense of inadequacy makes him sympathetic.
