What the Devil? The Best Movie Lucifers

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which opened on Christmas and goes nationwide next week, has plenty of inventive casting -- most notably, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all take turns as the late Heath Ledger's character. But we also must tip our hats to the casting of gravely-voiced singer Tom Waits as The Devil. It's a role few actors have pulled off with both humor and gravitas. Besides Waits, here are some of our favorites:

Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate (1997)
Pacino's devil is a smooth-talking lawyer who manages to fool almost everyone into thinking he's the good guy. We love Pacino's transition from seductive wise guy to full-on-crazy demon.

Ray Walston in Damn Yankees (1958)
In this musical -- soon to be remade with Jim Carrey -- an obsessed baseball fan makes a deal with the devil to give his team a shot at the Series. Walston plays Satan as a quick-witted smooth talker in a suit; we expect Carrey's version will be a little more over-the-top.

Viggo Mortenson in The Prophecy (1995)
Viggo is most often cast as a hero -- saving Middle Earth from destruction in Lord of the Rings, sacrificing himself for his son's future in The Road -- but we love him just as much as the ultimate villain, ripping out the angel Gabriel's heart and eating it with perverse delight.

Trey Parker in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
In the twisted world of South Park, Satan just wants to be loved, and the only guy who returns his affection is Saddam Hussein. Series co-creator Parker gives the devil plenty of great moments, like the Disney-esque ballad "Up There" ("Without evil there could be no good, so it must be good to be evil sometimes!").

Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Okay, so she's not literally playing Lucifer, but we couldn't complete this list without throwing in a strong woman. Besides, what could be more devilish than a condescending, backstabbing boss who looks better than you in a miniskirt?
