Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy): 'Les Miserables'
This category made a lot more sense when it debuted in the 1950s. These days, movie musicals tend to be dramas, which means that the deadly serious Les Miserables is competing with the quirky Silver Linings Playbook and the whimsical Moonrise Kingdom. It's not a fair fight, but it makes it relatively easy to predict the winner: the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves musicals, and Les Miserables is the only one nominated. Plus, in a category full of limited-release indie films, it's the one certifiable mainstream hit.
