What's a classic high school movie without an delightfully cheesy prom scene? From the 1970s to present-day, these onscreen dances all came with big hair, over-the-top gowns and plenty of teenage drama.
Check out our 10 favorite onscreen prom scenes, and then tell us yours!
Never Been Kissed (1999)
Fortunately for Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore), she got a prom do-over, where she told off the mean popular kids and dressed like royalty. But it was her first high school prom that we remember best. That dress! Those braces! That jerk Billy Prince!
Mean Girls (2004)
High school can be vicious, and it’s even worse when your friends have turned against you. But Cady (Lindsay Lohan) doesn’t let that get her down at Spring Fling. She’s elected Spring Fling Queen and gives a humble, graceful acceptance speech -- before finally landing cutie Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett)!
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Forget Edward and Jacob! Team Duckie vs. Team Blane was the romantic rivalry of cinema at the time. Although Andie (Molly Ringwald) decides to follow her heart in the end, we’ll always love Duckie’s (Jon Cryer) dancing shoes at prom!
At Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) prom, she and Edward (Robert Pattinson) share a dance that nearly ends with him turning her into a vampire so they can spend a life together. How… romantic? Well, it certainly made prom night more exciting!
You won’t find any wallflowers at the Bomont High School prom! We love the final dance number in Footloose for its high energy, awesome music and totally mockable fashion. Plus, there's no denying that Kevin Bacon has some serious moves!
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Although prom night was a disaster for some, 10 Things I Hate About You featured one of the most entertaining big-screen dances. From Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) punching Joey (Andrew Keegan) in the face to Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) getting his dream girl, the night is full of surprises. Plus, we love a good excuse to remeber the handsome Heath Ledger.
It definitely wasn’t romantic, and it's pretty much the opposite of a fairy-tale evening -- but after getting doused in a bucket of pig’s blood, Carrie’s (Sissy Spacek) creepy retaliation against her classmates makes this prom night iconic.
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997)
Don’t we all wish we could get a second chance at prom? For Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow), the do-over paid off. From their sparkling pastel mini dresses to a choreographed dance with rich stud Sandy (Alan Cumming), these girls were finally the belles of the ball.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Drugs, alcohol and general debauchery make up all the ingredients of a wild high school career! We were almost jealous of the freewheeling Ridgemont High students, especially when stoner Spicoli (Sean Penn) joined the live band on stage during prom and performed with them.
Two words: Hand Jive.
