Smugglers Notch, Vermont

Why it's special: This award-winning family resort near Stowe, in Vermont's Green Mountains, offers a slew of indoor/outdoor activities for all ages and condos right near the slopes so you can ski in and out.

Children's programs: Babies and tots are nurtured at Treasures Child Care Center, where groups include: Fireflies (ages 6 weeks to 16 months); Little Dippers (ages 17 months to 2½ years); and Little Rascals (ages 2½ to 3 years), which has an optional introductory skiing program with pint-sized hill and lift. Starting at age 3, kids can join all-day ski and snowboard camps: Discovery Dynamos (ages 3–5) teaches basics on gentle hills and at Burton Riglet snowboard park, with a swinging chair (for practicing getting on and off the lifts). Adventure Rangers group lessons (ages 6–10) boost skills and confidence through games and guided treks. Tweens and teens can ski, snowboard and socialize with The Notch Squad (ages 11–15) and Mountain Explorers (ages 16–17).

What to do off the slopes: Go swimming, ice skating, snowshoeing, zip lining and compete in family tubing races. You'll all have a blast at the FunZone Family Entertainment & Recreation Center with bouncy house, table games, obstacle course and giant double-lane slide (go ahead mom and dad, you know you want to try it!). Teens have their own dedicated hangouts, too. At night there are family dance and karaoke parties and bonfire sing-alongs; and weekly torch parades with fireworks.
