What’s your sign? The position of the stars when you were born can determine whether you’ll be bored with that new yoga class, energized by climbing a mountain or prone to injury during CrossFit. In addition to personality, each of the 12 constellations rule a different part of the body, says Antoinette (Toni) Thomas-Dore, an Ohio astrologer and founder of astrology-source.com
. “The head, stomach, back and so on, all the way down to the feet is ruled by a different sign, so certain exercises work better for each sign.”
Thomas-Dore also recommends considering your astrological element as well: water, earth, air and fire. “Should you be exercising in water or do you need wind in your face if you’re an air sign?” Thomas-Dore says. “If you’re a fire sign you may need heat to workout. Earth signs may need to be outside more.” Taking into account each sign’s ruling body part and weaknesses and personality type, Thomas-Dore and Ellen Barrett, fitness expert and co-author of Zodiaction: Fat-Burning Fitness Tailored to Your Personal Star Quality (2008)
offer the following star-guided tips.
Aries (March 21 –April 19)
Body part to watch: head
Aries need to exercise vigorously, says Thomas-Dore. They also like to roam, so cycling and road racing and competitive sports are ideal as well, says Barrett. Watch out for injuries from pushing too hard, especially those resulting in bumps to the head.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Body part to watch: throat and neck
As a homebody, workouts at home with DVDs or YouTube work well for Taurus, says Barrett. “They also can’t tolerate unpleasant surroundings, like smelly gyms or loud irritating music.” Weight issues often plague Taurus because of their love of comfort and comfort foods, so they also need to watch their diet, says Barrett.
Gemini (May 21 – June 21)
Body part to watch: arms
Represented by twins, Gemini’s tend to get bored easily, says Barrett. “They need variety. Joining a gym that offers a lot of cool classes like fusion workouts is ideal for Gemini, although they tend to fatigue easily.” They may also enjoy yoga.
Cancer (June 22 – July 22)
Body part to watch: hands
A nurturing, homebody sign, Cancers also tend to enjoy home workouts. “They don’t like cumbersome equipment,” says Barrett. “The fluid stretching of vinyasa yoga appeals to Cancers.” They often have weak core strength and would benefit from front and side planks as well as work on a stability ball.
Leo (July 23 – Aug 22)
Body part to watch: back, heart
Leos love attention and would enjoy ashtanga yoga, says Barrett. “It has Leo written all over it. It’s powerful and attention-getting and allows you to strut your stuff.” The upper back often trouble Leos, so strengthen this area with seated rows or dumbbell rows.
Virgo (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Body part to watch: stomach
Virgos like anything involving detox, says Barrett, making Bikram (a form of hot yoga) yoga perfect for them. “Since digestion can be a trouble spot for Virgos, exercise in general is great ‘medicine’ for their digestion.” They also tend to worry a lot, says Thomas-Dore. “Relaxation and meditation can also be of benefit.”
Libra (Sept 22 – Oct 22)
Body part to watch: kidneys
Libras can obsess about balance, body symmetry and proportions, making Barre classes an ideal exercise, says Barrett. Common lower back tension and lack of range of motion can be eased with regular stretching as well. “Kidneys can be a trouble spot, so Libras should also always drink plenty of water, especially when exercising,” says Thomas-Dore.
Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21)
Body part to watch: sexual organs, pelvis
Scorpios do well working out alone, says Barrett. “Go for a hike in the woods with a dog or run on the treadmill, and keep your iPod loud enough so you can’t hear those around you.” Scorpios also like interval training—short spurts of high intensity followed by lower intensity. Upper arms tend to get flabby, says Barrett. Do two sets of 10 push-ups everyday to keep them firm.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Body part to watch: thighs
Sagittarians love to run and usually thrive with tennis, walking or running, says Thomas-Dore. “They also love a challenge.” For this reason they’re good candidates for CrossFit, says Barrett. “They need to have a reason and a goal and need to constantly change things up.” Since thighs can be a trouble spot, make sure to stretch and strengthen the hamstrings to avoid pulled muscles.
Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Body part to watch: knees
Capricorns love a challenge and are natural mountain climbers, says Thomas-Dore. They also tend to focus for long periods of time and love to test their stamina, says Barrett. “They like long distance hiking but need to be aware of being too hard on their knees, their trouble spot.” Exercises such as lunges and squats help strengthen and support knees.
Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Body part to watch: ankles
Aquarians love the outdoors, surfing, the water and a variety of classes in the gym, says Thomas-Dore. “They especially like to workout to music, which motivates them.” Those born during this time must also take care of their ankles, their weak spot. Try workouts while standing on a balance board to strengthen muscles that support the ankle.
Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Body part to watch: feet
As a water sign, Pisces love workout out in the water, says Thomas-Dore. They do well with swimming, surfing and scuba diving but must watch out for their trouble spot: their feet. “They should always wear proper footwear for their activity,” says Thomas-Dore.
