Oh, what fun it must be to live at the Bethenny Frankel/Jason Hoppy residence right now! Though the reality TV sweethearts split up way back in December, neither is willing to give up the loft apartment they share in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood. Until a court decides who gets the place, they're stuck with each other. And Bryn, their three-year-old daughter, is stuck in the middle of their divorce mess.
Speaking of Bryn, they both want her, too -- which is why they found themselves back in court on June 20. Both Bethenny and Jason have been building a case for primary physical custody, but these court dates take time. In the meantime, “Jason is complaining that Bethenny won’t let him see Bryn enough, and that she’s been spending all of her time with her at her friend’s apartment and not in her own home,” a source told RadarOnline.com.
Divorce and custody fights are never pretty, but when the contenders have money to burn and tabloid interviews to exploit, the ugliness can expand exponentially. We've seen it happen already with Halle Berry, whose custody battle with ex Gabriel Aubry over their daughter Nahla was complicated when they got into a violent altercation, right in the midst of negotiations, which landed in the national news. (They eventually struck a joint custody agreement.)
Post-breakup, Heidi Klum and Seal also had some serious disagreements about the kids. Klum requested primary physical custody of their four children (with visitation rights for Seal); while Seal filed his own papers for joint custody.
Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford told E! that her costly, high-profile custody battle with former husband Daniel Giersch had sent her to the brink of bankruptcy.
And in the aftermath of their divorce, neither Britney Spears, nor her ex, Kevin Federline, appeared to be the most responsible parents to their sons Sean and Jayden. Spears initially won custody, but Federline won it back after those hard-partying, head-shaving episodes of hers in 2007. The following year, even Spears' visitation rights were suspended. But perhaps it's a positive sign for Frankel that even this dysfunctional pair did eventually reach a joint custody deal.
"Listen, it's a struggle, and like any struggle, you push through it and move forward," Frankel said in a recent interview. Lucky for her, Frankel's got a talk show to create! Here's the promo for Bethenny!
