Nearly half a million Facebook fans agree: It’s high time that 88-year-old Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live!
White, a television comedy icon for playing Rose on The Golden Girls and Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, is enjoying a career comeback in 2009 and 2010. After cracking up moviegoers as Ryan Reynolds’ feisty granny in The Proposal, she charmed football fans in one of the year's most popular Super Bowl ads, and she was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Proposal costar Sandra Bullock at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards. Now, her fans want more. A fast-growing Facebook group, Betty White to Host SNL (Please?), is trying to persuade SNL producer Lorne Michaels to let the Golden Girl host an episode.
As for White, she is stunned by the fan adulation. In an online interview with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday, the star exclaimed, “Where did that come from?” and added, “I’m such a technological spaz, I don’t understand any of that stuff! I’m just watching it in awe.” Turns out White was asked to host SNL years ago, but was unable to squeeze it into her schedule (and she admits she was a little intimidated).
Could the internet campaign, started by 29-year-old David Matthews, actually land White on the main stage of NBC's fabled Studio 8H? If so, it wouldn’t be the first time in recent history that a fan campaign has swayed TV execs. In 2007, CBS was persuaded to order another half-season of Jericho when avid fans bombarded the network's offices with bags of peanuts; and in April, a two-month Twitter campaign helped convince NBC to renew the action-comedy Chuck.
