You'll Try to Stall the Inevitable

Because of your fear, you’ll try to avoid making the transition for as long as possible. You'll lower the crib mattress as far as it will go (like, to the floor!). You'll remove any climbing props (bye-bye, stuffed animals) that might make it easier for your toddler to escape. And as soon as it seems likely that your child can or will figure out how to climb out of the crib, you’ll run out to buy or borrow a crib tent. You'll tell her, “Ooh, look, you get to sleep in a circus tent!” or “Wow, it’s your very own house!” or “Now you’re protected from the killer mosquitoes!” -- anything to get her interested in the new arrangement and forestall her requests for a toddler or twin bed.
