Ginnifer Goodwin has a long history of watching her weight -- but she wants to reassure her fans that she's never been an extreme dieter. The Big Love actress, 32, made a controversial revelation in January's Health Magazine that she's been a member of Weight Watchers for 23 years.
"It’s the only thing on the planet that doesn’t dehydrate you or just make you miserable," she explained of her choice to stay on the plan. "I’ve never had a dramatic weight problem, it’s just that I tend to indulge, and then I need to get back on track so I can button my pants."
Sounds like a pretty normal philosophy -- but fans quickly did the math and realized that Goodwin joined Weight Watchers at age 9. Isn't that a little extreme? The actress says that it's the opposite: Weight Watchers taught her the healthy eating habits that she didn't learn as a child, and that she still relies on today.
"At 9 years old I weighed about ten pounds less than what my weight is at 32. I needed to get help," she tells People. "With the counseling of my family doctor, my mother ended up turning to Weight Watchers and their children's program... it was the first time I saw a proper children's portion size, and it wasn't two burgers, it was one."
Goodwin, who co-stars in the upcoming Kate Hudson dramedy Something Borrowed, says that she has "never had body issues" and never felt the need to go through "that horrible yo-yo cycle of binging." She's extremely critical of Hollywood actresses who keep the weight off with unhealthy means, like what she calls the "cocaine and cigarettes diet." And she's not afraid to call out friends who start getting into dangerous dieting territory.
"I pulled an actress friend aside and I said, 'I get it. I get what it is that you're trying to do, but there's being healthfully skinny and then there's starting to look like a scary alien cat,'" says Goodwin.
Goodwin got engaged to actor Joey Kern, her boyfriend of two years, on Christmas Eve. She will be co-starring in the fifth and final season of Big Love, premiering on January 16 on HBO.
