The Biggest Loser's Tanya on Week 9: Yes, I Own a Fast Food Chain

In her exclusive blog for iVillage, Tanya talks about how she will have to grapple with the fact that she sells fried food for a living

This week starts off in a place I’m oh so familiar with, a restaurant. Yep, our challenge for the week has hit home for me in a frightening way. The losing team of the pop challenge has to work in the diner for an entire week, while juggling our strenuous workouts with the trainers. The idea of being back in the “real sorld” this early in my journey was a scare for me and a harsh reality I would eventually face. As the COO of a fast food restaurant franchise and a fast food restaurant owner for the last 10 years, this challenge was more like a “Day in the Life” into my real world. Juggling the challenges of owning a business that I am very passionate about and having to eat unhealthy fried food on a daily basis is an issue I will need to eventually reconcile, but now is not the time.

As Ali gave us our pop challenge questions, the answers hit me like a ton of bricks. The statistics regarding workplace obesity is absolutely staggering -- a third of full-time employees in the United States are overweight or obese. Fast food is the number one source of food employees bring into the office. Transportation workers have the highest rate of obesity, and about 69 percent of administrative assistants have reported gaining weight on the job. The statistics made me not only think of my role as an entrepreneur and executive leader in the restaurant industry, but also how I could help with a solution to this epidemic, not just for me, but for consumers. But for now, we need to win this challenge so that I can get myself out of this kitchen, away from the temptation of fried foods, pastries, pastas, etc. and get back in the gym!

Needless to say, I was delighted for the red team to win the challenge and return to the ranch. But the white team received a taste of the real world. Millions of Americans are faced with the challenge of juggling work and working out on a daily basis. The white team’s hard work and commitment really paid off and proved to everyone that it can be successfully done. As for me, I’m excited I get to stay on the ranch for another week and not have to face that juggling just yet.
