During his time in the White House, Bill Clinton was known for his love of McDonald's and all things fast food. (Remember the old SNL sketch?) But as CNN reports, after two major heart procedures, the former president has embraced a healthier diet that's free of red meat, dairy, eggs and most oils.
According to the article, Clinton is following the advice of Dr. Dean Ornish and other health experts and avoiding foods that could damage his blood vessels. His team believes that a balanced vegan diet can prevent and possibly reverse heart disease.
He's dropped more than 20 pounds since the change and says he hasn't felt better. "All my blood tests are good, and my vital signs are good, and I feel good, and I also have, believe it or not, more energy," he told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now."
Some have suggested that his veganism was also inspired by daughter Chelsea's veganism. Her vegan wedding menu included a gluten-free cake.
Clinton has said that his unhealthy eating habits started at a young age. To encourage kids to make healthier choices, his foundation has partnered with the American Heart Association to help 12,000 schools promote exercise and offer better lunches.
