It's nice to see a rock star behaving like a gentlemen for a change. Following John Mayer's crude remarks about his sex life with ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson, Simpson's rumored beau Billy Corgan has stepped up to defend her honor. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the former Smashing Pumpkins frontman says that Mayer went too far by calling his ex "sexual napalm" in Playboy.
"As far as it pertains to her," Corgan said to the magazine, "I think for any person who has celebrity to sort of drop rocks at somebody's feet like that -- there's things that you should really just keep your mouths shut on. There's things that should just be left alone."
The 42-year-old musician also wondered aloud if John Mayer's comments were an attempt at career suicide: "It's hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground -- speaking as somebody who's done it."
As far as his own relationship with 29-year-old Simpson, Corgan remained enigmatic -- but did use the L word. Simpson has responded in kind, telling the press that Corgan is "a very very dear friend" and she "can't find good enough words to speak about Billy." The two musicians recently collaborated on a theme song for Simpson's VH1 reality show, The Price of Beauty. If their collaboration extends into a romantic one, neither is admitting it...yet.
