Surprisingly, Billy Mills followed his historic victory by becoming an insurance salesman! His story came back into the spotlight with the 1983 film Running Brave, a drama based on his life. Mills is now a motivational speaker and a committed advocate for Native American causes, working as the spokesperson for the organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. The 74-year-old grandfather is the author of two inspirational books, Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding and the bestselling Lessons of a Lakota (cowritten with The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks).
