As parents, I think we all struggle with that balance of how good of a friend we want to be to our kids. Do we want them to trust us with their secrets, rely on us for advice, and know they can call us for help at anytime? Of course. But do we want them to think we are equals and that they don't have to listen to anything we say? Ummm, no.
Which is why I'm so intrigued by Miley Cyrus and her dad, Billy Ray. Both are in the TV and music business, and both are always talking about how they are each other's best friend.
"My dad was to me what I try to be to Miley, which is somewhat of a best friend," Billy Ray told CNN."I try my best to be a good daddy and if she wants to talk about business or music I try my best to be a good manager. I try to be all of those things because that's what my dad was to me."
It's really nice, don't get me wrong, but the fact that Billy had no problem with Miley dancing like a ho on a stripper pole at the Teen Choice Awards is a little weird. She's 16 -- and he's her dad. He should be freaked out by that.
So, I pose the question to you: Should you be your kid's best friend?
