There's no in-between with blackberries. They're either juicy and sweet, or they're utterly bland. Aroma is a clue: If they smell faintly sweet, they may be good. If there's no scent at all, you'll find the same true for flavor.
- Have a faint, sweet aroma
- Have a deep, even color
- Are free of white or gray fuzz (this is mold)
- Wash just before you plan to eat them
- Sprinkle bland berries with fine granulated sugar to bring out the flavor
