There's no in-between with blackberries. They're either juicy and sweet, or they're utterly bland. Aroma is a clue: If they smell faintly sweet, they may be good. If there's no scent at all, you'll find the same true for flavor.

Look for berries that:

  • Have a faint, sweet aroma

  • Are free of white or gray fuzz (this is mold)

HOW TO STORE
Use them right after you buy or pick them, or refrigerate no more than two days.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Wash just before you plan to eat them
  • Sprinkle bland berries with fine granulated sugar to bring out the flavor
