Anybody who has ever had a wee baby in their care for any regular stretches of time knows that those hours can get...long. And monotonous. And let’s just say it: boring. We cheered when clever copywriter Adele Enersen found a way to wile away the time by photographing her sleeping baby amid delightfully styled sets on her whimsical blog, Mila’s Daydreams. (Apparently that site had a built-in expiration date -- roughly when Mila stopped sleeping 23/7 -- so now Enersen’s site features mostly her art, which also rocks.)
Our new favorite blog takes that same idea (namely, gently exploit your child for fun and maybe -- hopefully, one day -- profit) and gives it a comical twist: Arthur Recreates Scenes from Classic Movies is pretty much exactly what the title says. There’s no hoopla, no "about me" page, no links to buy related Arthur merchandise. (Yet.) It’s just adorable little Arthur, posing (or more aptly, posed) in photos styled to recreate classic movie scenes.
We’re not talking Disney flicks here, either: There’s Arthur amid a bed of rose petals (recreating American Beauty), Arthur in the tub looking as if he’s about to swallow a plastic dolphin (Jaws), and our personal favorite, Arthur in a grown-up bed...with his stuffed giraffe’s head peeking out from beneath the covers. (And if we have to tell you what that’s recreating, shame on you. Honestly.) The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Total Recall, Alien, The Blair Witch Project: The remake lineup is decidedly R-rated, which is precisely what makes it so damned funny -- at least to us.
Sure, there are bound to be parents out there who will deem this site "inappropriate" due to the adult-content of the flicks. Obviously -- seeing as little Art isn’t watching the films he’s recreating -- I wholeheartedly disagree. Plus, seeing as Arthur is awake and alert in every shot (unlike Mila), setting up and getting the shot seems like a fun and innovative way to interact with your kid.
