You know that kid who upstaged you every single year in the school science fair? I’m pretty sure she grew up to be Adele Enersen. While on maternity leave, the erstwhile advertising copywriter is creating a darling photo-documentary of her daughter on her blog, Mila's Daydreams. But Enersen’s photos aren’t typical new-mom pics. Instead, the designer uses pillows, Pashminas, books, balls and balloons to create elaborate dreamscapes around her sleeping bambina.
"While my baby is taking her nap, I try to imagine her dream and capture it," Enersen explains. In one shot Mila is a (snoozing) surfer chick catching a gnarly wave; in the next she’s a (napping) astronaut orbiting some faraway galaxy. In her short little life, Mila’s played a circus juggler, rock star, mermaid, bunny, butterfly, bat-baby and more -- and her imaginative mom has the photos to prove it.
The blog is clever and whimsical and I particularly enjoy the way Enersen incorporates Mila’s conked-out postures into her designs. (One leg cocked? She’s about to kick a ball! Both arms up? She’s being carried away by a bouquet of balloons!) But I can’t help be a little bit jealous. After all, I have to admit I wasn’t exactly inspired or productive when my newborns were napping. (I was too busy washing endless loads of laundry, wondering where my waistline went and trying to catch some zzz's myself.)
Plus, now I wonder if all the whispering, tiptoeing and rushing-to-hush-the-dog when a car pulled up to the curb was a big, fat waste of time and energy. I mean, if a baby can sleep through a nonstop parade of costume and set changes, what’s the sense of fretting over the occasional creaking floorboard?
But, seriously, the blog really is wonderful. You should check it out.
