As Whitney Houston's loved ones prepare to expose their family to public scrutiny in the new Lifetime reality show The Houstons: On Our Own, one issue is becoming increasingly less clear -- whether the late superstar's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown is in fact engaged to her "adopted brother" Nick Gordon.
Brown, 19, first sparked engagement rumors when she was spotted wearing one of her mother's diamond rings on her left hand in March. At the time, sources said that Nick had popped the question.
Then, on a clip from the show's season premiere, it appeared that Bobbi Kristina confirmed the news herself. But when asked about her niece's engagement at the show's press day on Tuesday, Pat Houston (Whitney's sister) replied, "They are friends, they will always be friends."
Just friends? That's not how engaged couples usually describe themselves. So are Bobbi and Nick getting married or not?
"At the beginning of the show they are," Pat told E! News.
"It's a journey," she added, "and you have to realize, she had just lost her mother and she's 19 years old. So I didn't take the engagement very serious, not at all, because I understood the dynamics of what's happening as it relates to that relationship. He looks out for her, he really and truly does."
Regardless of what's going on between Bobbi Kristina and Nick, Aunt Pat says she's extremely proud of Whitney's daughter.
"I am very proud of her," Pat said. "I always explain to her, I'm not concerned about a music career for her, or an acting career for her. I'm more concerned about life management for her, her being able to navigate through life to take care of herself in a very positive way. Becoming a strong, independent woman, being able to live her life without a lot of handlers or people telling her what to do in it, giving her values and morals and strengthening her."
The Houstons: On Our Own airs on Lifetime Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, starting with two, back-to-back episodes on Oct. 24
