Book Review: Boo to You

Lois Ehlert’s Boo to You is far more than just a Halloween book. It celebrates the scary season and the harvest with a story of mice chasing away a cat who might want to dine on more than just their vegetarian bounty.

Ehlert has long been known for her flat collage illustrations, created from a crazed blend of things and pictures of things, from buttons and ribbons to seeds and corn. Boo to You is one of her best efforts yet at inspiring her readers to pick up their glue sticks and follow suit.

There’s no (apparent) mystery about how she’s created her mouse or cat—each element of every picture stands out to admire. Too often, the Halloween table at the bookstore is all gimmick and no glory, but Boo to You has more to offer than just a few thematic illustrations. Story, pictures, and a special page of pumpkin, Halloween, and harvest pictures come together to make this one a treat.
