Back in May, as busy dad Brad Pitt was busy ferrying his children into a helicopter, his shirt blew up, revealing a strange back tattoo to the surrounding paparazzi. The markings, a random-looking series of lines and rectangular shapes, stumped reporters. The Daily Mail theorized that it was a map of the New Orleans levee system, or that son Maddox had been scribbling on Pitt's back.
Actually, that second one wasn't too far off.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie reveals that she drew the back tattoo herself.
"We went to Davos," she told the interviewer. "It’s not that we were bored at the World Economic Forum, but one night we didn’t have anything to do, so I was drawing on his back...He just liked it! The picture everybody saw was kind of awkward, but it just lines up beautifully on his back, just enhances the part of the body I like."
When pressed for the meaning of the drawing, Jolie said, "I mean, it’s meaningful in that it’s us making angles and shapes out of each other’s body, that kind of a thing."
In other words: it's basically meaningless.
At least Pitt intentionally got a meaningless tattoo (with a cute backstory to boot). Stars who've mistakenly gotten nonsense tattoos include Hayden Panettiere (her tattoo artist misspelled the Italian phrase meaning "to live without regrets") and Britney spears (who has two foreign language tattoos, in Japanese and Hebrew -- both mistranslated).
Angelina, on the other hand, is the queen of meaningful tattoos, most notably wearing the coordinates of her children's birthplaces on her left arm.
