Many breast changes occur during pregnancy. Early in pregnancy, breasts usually become more tender and begin to fill out. This is due to the development of the milk producing structures within the breast. Blood flow increases and veining becomes more noticeable. The nipples, which have become more sensitive, and the areola darken in color and become a visual cue for the baby when he is put to the breast.

Some moms-to-be experience a bit of discomfort as all these changes are taking place. Wearing a comfortable, supportive bra should help.

If your wife continues to experience pain, has an elevated temperature, flu-like symptoms, or any reddened areas on her breast she should be evaluated by her health care provider. My best wishes!
