This Is Awesome: Breastfeeding Flashmob Protests Anti-Nursing Cafe in Britain

Let it be heard: Don't mess with a nursing mama on any continent. In the latest headline-making case involving boobs and baby-feeding, 28-year-old Kelly Schaecher was setting up to breastfeed her baby at the Park Street Café in Bristol, England, when she was asked to move to a more private corner. The Huffington Post reports that when a visibly upset Schaecher decided to pack it in instead of merely switching tables, she claims her waitress followed her outside, bellowing "Don't you ever come back to my café with your t** out again!"

Classy, huh?

The mad mom took her story to the highest court (Twitter and Facebook), inspiring hundreds of equally irate supporters to start a breastfeeding flashmob to protest the restaurant and it's anti-nursing attitude. Then taking a page straight out of PR Damage Control 101, the café owner showed up and apologized to the crowd, ensuring them that milking moms are most welcome in his establishment -- and even put a sign in the window stating so to boot!

Britain's Equity Act says that it is sex discrimination to treat a woman unfavorably because she is breastfeeding. The Act defines discrimination as refusing to provide a service, providing a lower standard of service or providing a service on different terms. Clearly, the clueless waitress -- whose fate wasn't mentioned in the article but whom I can only hope was canned on the spot -- was in direct breach of the terms.

What I love about stories like this -- aside from the part where the restaurant owner chose to man up, oh and the happy ending --  is that they get people talking. And when people talk, they get mad. And when they get mad, they make things happen. Great, baby-friendly things. I'll drink to that.
