Surprised to see Bret Michaels on last night's American Idol finale? So were some of the people closest to the recovering rocker! Turns out, Michaels, 47 -- who has suffered both a brain hemorrhage and a "warning stroke" over the past month -- didn't tell his doctors or family he'd be performing on the season finale.
Michaels suprised Idol fans by strolling onstage during the finale to perform his Poison classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" as a duet with contestant Casey James. "The doctors, I didn't tell them I was going to do this," Michaels admitted to USWeekly.com, adding that he also didn't get around to mentioning it to his family, "I may not have told them, either."
But is it all too much for Michaels -- who also appeared on Sunday's Celebrity Apprentice finale, where he emerged as the season's champ? "To be honest, there's still obviously a lot of pain I’m still experiencing....(but) I feel great."
Michaels, who said he was approached to appear on AI long before he fell ill, went on to admit, "Here’s the thing, they have not said everything’s okay. I’m running about 75 percent realistically, physically, but in my soul and my heart, I feel great. I needed to do this tonight, just to come here."
It was the first time Michaels performed since his near-death experience, but it all felt just right to the rocker. "I got on stage, first of all, the fans and friends and family were all here. It was such an awesome feeling to see everyone screaming and cheering and singing along with the song. I was like, 'Hey, that’s three generations out there, that’s all I’ve wanted to do is have a great music career and to be able to do that, 20-some years later, that’s a great feeling."
It seems AI served as a practice run for Michaels, who plans to get back on the road to resume his tour on Friday in Biloxi, Miss. He told Us, "I’m going to see how that goes and just take it a few shows at a time." While he knows he wants to be back on the road, there's one place in particular he doesn't want to see for a long time. As Michaels said to MTV, "I've spent the last month and a half in the hospital. I don't ever want to see a hospital again. I just want to go out and have a great time."
