For more than a year, the relationship between Sarah Palin's daughter and the father of 18-month-old son Tripp has been filled with drama. And now, they've announced the biggest shocker of all: The high school sweethearts are putting aside their differences and getting married.
And if you're surprised, imagine how shocked Bristol's famous mom must have felt learning about the Us Weekly coverage of her daughter's engagement, which includes a startling headline -- "Bristol: 'My Mom Doesn't Know We're Together'" -- as well as the bride-to-be's admission that it's "intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be...hopefully she will jump on board."
Bristol, 19, and Levi, 20, caused a political scandal back when they called off their engagement two weeks after the birth of their son Tripp in December 2008. Public feuds and custody battles followed their split, but now the two have reunited in order to focus on putting their family back together.
"I really thought we were over," Levi tells Us Weekly of the night they reconnected three months ago. "So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking -- and then we took Tripp for a walk."
Bristol adds: "When he left that night, we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: 'I miss you. I love you. I want to be with you again'... I was in shock."
The former Alaskan governor and GOP power player -- who hasn't been shy about her disdain for Levi -- told NBC's Today show in a written statement: "Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what's best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives." Ummm...so Sarah and Todd Palin are ready to forgive and toast the happy lovebirds? Maybe not just yet, from the sounds of it!
Are we excited to hear find out what Sarah Palin plans to say at the couple's wedding? You betcha!
